What is Oliguria?

First, let’s break down what a decrease in urine production is.

The medical term for this is oliguria. Wikipedia defines oliguria as the low output of urine. In the average human, this amount is considered to be more than 80mls a day, but less than 400mls.

There are many reasons why your body may be failing to urinate regularly, which is why we recommend seeking medical advice if this is the case.

These health conditions may include kidney failure, dehydration, urinary obstruction, urinary retention, pre-eclampsia, and urinary tract infection. While some of these health conditions are more serious than others, it’s good to be able to pinpoint the exact cause.

If your urine output is less than 80mls a day, you are suffering from anuria and need to seek professional help.

If you’re worried about your urine production, talk to your doctor about the various causes. If you don’t think it’s due to a serious health condition, try increasing your urine production with one of the following methods.

The first, obvious advice when suffering from a low level of urine production is to drink more water. We'll cover that in a little bit. In the meantime, let's look at a slight variation on the regular water that can also be beneficial. Top 10 Home Remedies explain that putting a little bit of lemon in your water can be useful.

This is because lemon juice is a diuretic. A diuretic is any substance that promotes the increased production of urine.

Lemons are great for this task because they help draw out any excess salt you may have in your body. Too much salt in your system can cause you to retain fluid.

Lemons are also great at fighting certain infections associated with urine and urine producing organs. They can help fight urinary tract infections and assist with high uric problems.

Lemon also contains citric acid, which is excellent for flushing out unwanted toxins in the body.

Mix half a lemon with a glass of warm or hot water. Add some honey if you like it slightly sweet. Try to drink at least one glass of lemon water a day, in an empty stomach.

Now, let's talk about dehydration concerning oliguria. Dehydration is one of the most common causes of a decreased urine output, which leads us to our next best way to increase urine production – drink more water. If you're not regularly replenishing your fluids, your kidneys will hold on to as much liquid as possible.

Therefore, you must make a point of drinking more water to alleviate or completely prevent dehydration.

The general rule when figuring out how much water to drink daily goes by body weight. For every 50 pounds, you should drink four glasses of water. Therefore, if you weigh 150 pounds, you should be drinking 12 cups of water a day.

There are other ways you can include water in your diet other than drinking it out of a glass. There are a lot of fruits and vegetables that have high water content. We recommend trying to get as much of your fluid as possible from the food that you eat.

As always, there must be balance. This means that your kidneys may also suffer if you drink too much water. Try to maintain a healthy balance by not overdoing it.

Therefore, you must make a point of drinking more water to alleviate or completely prevent dehydration.

The general rule when figuring out how much water to drink daily goes by body weight. For every 50 pounds, you should drink four glasses of water.

If you're somebody who doesn't love the idea of drinking that much water every day, you could try a liquid alternative that offers a bit more flavor.

Dandelion root contains elements that may help to increase your urine production. It can also help decrease the amount of water your body holds onto.

Because dandelion root is a natural diuretic, it’s great for cleaning your kidneys out at the same time. Similar to lemon, it has detoxifying properties that will help flush the body of unwanted toxins.

Similarly, it also works on maintaining healthy function of the liver.

To drink dandelion root, boil two teaspoons with one cup of water for five minutes. Once five minutes is up, cover your cup and let the tea steep for at least ten minutes.

Strain the dandelion root out of the cup and add honey for a bit of sweetness. We recommend drinking up to two cups of dandelion tea a day for several weeks.

When drinking dandelion tea, it's a good idea to keep track of any other medication you may be on. Dandelion root can react to certain drugs, so talk to your doctor before you try this method.

When it comes to being dehydrated, it isn’t typically a complicated fix in adults. However, when it comes to children, keeping them dehydrated can be quite a task, especially if they’re sick. If your child is feverish and vomiting, they can become dehydrated quite quickly.

This can lead to the shutting down of the body, so we recommend getting onto this right away.

A quick, urgent way to replenish lost fluids and increase your urine production is by using a hydrating solution. Wikihow explains that this type of method is helpful in children who need rehydrating urgently.

A rehydrating solution can be administered to you by a pharmacist or doctor. While there are different types of hydrating solutions, common ones include Pedialyte and Hydralyte.

At first, when they're especially dehydrated, we recommend administering a teaspoon every 5 minutes. You can increase this amount gradually – just make sure not to give them too much at once.

Because this is an extreme method, talk to your healthcare professional about giving the right doses. This will depend on the age of your child. If your child is young, you may want to use a syringe.

Older children can also be rehydrated with electrolytes, found in common sports drinks.

Getting IV Fluids for Oliguria

Another extreme measure you can take in the case of severe dehydration is receiving an IV fluid drip. Hospitals reserve intravenous fluids for those who are extremely dehydrated to the point of organ damage or failure. You can be administered an IV fluid drip at your nearest emergency department if you feel this is necessary.

Your healthcare professional will administer the IV fluid drip by placing a saline solution through a needle into a vein on your arm. Because this is an immediate and effective way to rehydrate, you'll find yourself needing to go to the toilet quite soon afterward.

If you’re not sure whether you qualify for this method, there are some signs to look out for. These include no urination for hours, mental confusion, dried skin, an increase in heartbeat or breathing, fever, or unconsciousness.

We always recommend consulting with your nearest healthcare professional when considering methods as extreme as an IV fluid drip. A lot of the time, you may be able to rehydrate yourself with another, less drastic approach.

If you experience any or all of the above symptoms, find your way to your nearest emergency department straight away.

When it comes to home remedies, there are many different ways to increase your urine production, naturally. We've already talked about tea being beneficial, let's enter the world of essential oils.

Healthline explains that sniffing peppermint oil may cause you to go to the toilet more often.

We recommend placing a few drops of peppermint oil on a cotton ball and taking it with you to the toilet. Once you're on the toilet, put the cotton ball under your nose, relax, and inhale deeply.

Another way you can implement peppermint oil into your regular toilet trips is by placing a few drops into the toilet itself. The natural fumes can waft and promote your need to pee.

Organic Facts explains that peppermint oil has another use concerning urine production. It can also be used to treat urinary tract infections, a common cause of oliguria.

While formal scientific research has yet to prove this definitively, it has been traditionally used as a treatment for UTI’s for hundreds of years.

Peppermint oil harbors many antibacterial qualities. This means it can potentially improve symptoms often associated with a urinary tract infection, promoting an increase in your urine production.

While we’re talking about natural home remedies, let’s explore another category that you’re likely to find in your kitchen cupboard – herbs. Herbs have many medicinal properties, including aiding in the production of urine. Karen Hellesvig-Gaskell of Livestrong explains that there is a variety of different herbs that can help with this problem.

Among other properties, rosemary is known for increasing the flow of your urine. Saw palmetto is another herb effective at relieving symptoms often associated with weak urine flow. It can also help with nighttime urination if this is something you struggle with.

There are a couple of other herbs that can help treat symptoms found exclusively in men when it comes to urine production. Enlarged prostate glands and inflammation of the prostate are notorious health conditions when it comes to issues around urine flow. The herbs, African plumtree and Pygeum, are great when it comes to treating these two medical conditions.

We recommend consulting with your doctor or healthcare professional before considering any type of medication, including herbal home remedies.

Everyone responds differently to each method, so being informed of any possible side effects is essential.

Natural remedies may also react when taken in conjunction with certain medications.

Using a Warm Compress for Oliguria

The body often works best when it is completely relaxed. When your muscles aren't contracted and restricted, regular bodily functions are able to take place. This is why we recommend using heat to help relax the muscles associated with urine production and flow.

Karen continues by explaining that applying heat to your bladder and the surrounding muscles can be an effective way of loosening up any tight muscles and encouraging your body to pass urine.

To do this, boil two to three cups of water and fill up a hot water bottle. Alternatively, you can use a clean, dry flannel by running it under hot water until it's thoroughly soaked and a pleasant, hot temperature.

For complete relaxation, we recommend applying heat as hot as you can handle. The warmer the temperature you use, the more relaxed your muscles will be.

Place your hot water bottle or hot compress flannel over your lower abdomen. Place it below the navel, but above the pubic bone. Hold it in place for a few minutes until it feels like you're starting to relax. You can also promote urine production by massaging the muscles in this area, too.

Oliguria isn’t necessarily a serious health condition. However, it can be indicative of a severe health condition.

Sometimes, you'll just forget to drink your daily water requirement and be dehydrated. Other times, you could develop kidney issues or a urinary tract infection, causing a decrease in your urine production.

To increase your urine flow and eradicate oliguria, try these simple, straightforward methods.

We always recommend consulting your doctor or healthcare professional before trying anything new as they'll be able to give you further advice.
