Acne isn’t only a troublesome complication of puberty. Sadly, it may persist during adulthood and even if it only comes and goes, there are situations when one single pimple shows up at the worst possible time. Pimples are confidence murderers and despite the fact that one single, tiny complexion flaw is barely noticeable, it’s enough to ruin an entire day. So we have gathered a multitude of suggestions on how to get rid of pimples.
But first, let’s understand what pimples are and how they occur.
What You Need to Know About Pimples
Let’s first start by understanding what a pimple actually is. Pimples are actually skin lesions or inflammations that occur when an oil gland is infected with bacteria. They may contain pus, though during the initial stages of a pimple’s formation, it may not be present. Pimples occur most frequently on the face, the chest, the back, the shoulders and the buttocks.
Numerous factors are involved in the occurrence of acne. Everything from hormonal imbalances to diet changes and stress may contribute to the appearance of acne. Sebum overproduction is incriminated as one of the essential contributing factors when it comes to acne, as it literally clogs the ducts of oil glands, causing them to be inflamed.
A common misconception is that proper face hygiene will put a stop to acne. This causes numerous adolescents (and adults) to buy aggressive skincare products. Sadly, such regimens only harm the skin and create vicious circles: the more you wash it away, the more your face produces.
Pimples come in various shapes and sizes:
- Whiteheads: they occur on oily skin
- Blackheads: these are not caused by dirt, they often involve dead-cell buildup and occur often on the nose
- Nodules: this occurs when the surrounding area of the pimple becomes inflamed
- Cysts: large and deep pus-filled pimples
Try to have a healthy diet consisting of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. Make sure you avoid processed foods, fats and sugar as much as possible. Remove your make-up before going to sleep, since oil-based foundation has a tendency of causing pimples. Stick to organic and natural when possible.
1. Salicylic Acid
Certain substances have been dermatologically tested to reduce inflammation and alleviate the symptoms of pimples. Most people only want to know how to get rid of pimples fast, however, salicylic acid requires a bit of time. It works by drying up the skin it comes in contact with, so find a compound that includes salicylic acid and apply it as soon as you feel pimples appearing. In emergency situations, you can use aspirin, as it too has an anti-inflammatory effect.
2. Antibiotics and Antibiotic Creams
Benzoyl peroxide or clindamycin are found in certain acne creams and they can work wonders, especially if used sparingly. Another option is to consider retinol products, which contain Vitamin A complexes. Be careful when using retinol, though, as it will cause the skin around the pimple to dry up.
3. Steroid Injections
Use such treatments only as a last resort. In the case of deep, cystic acne, steroid injections may be a worthwhile solution if your dermatologist prescribes them. While consulting with your dermatologist, ask for additional options, such as steroid creams and hormone therapy.

4. Use Ice
Just as you would use ice to bring down swelling after hitting your head, so too can you use ice to reduce inflammation and redness. But there are added benefits to using ice for inflamed pimples. You tighten your skin pores, improve circulation and reduce oil accumulations. Simply wrap a bit of ice in a clean piece of cloth and apply it on the affected area.
5. Natural Acids
Lemon juice and vinegar are two easy-to-find ingredients you can use when you have to get rid of a pimple overnight. You can use a cotton disk soaked in apple cider vinegar and lemon juice and hold it against the affected area for fast results. Make sure that you dilute the vinegar if it is too powerful.
This foul-smelling vegetable isn’t only used to ward off Dracula and his offspring. It can also clear pimples fast. Garlic has massive amounts of antioxidants and is world-renowned for having antifungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Apart from just eating the stuff, you can also use a peeled clove of garlic to take care of big pimples. Rub the clove on the affected area multiple times over the course of a day and see it shrink.
There are many natural antiseptics and honey is one of them. It can be used to bot only destroy bacteria but also speed up your skin’s natural healing process. You can either dab a honey-coated sterile cotton swab directly onto the skin, or combine the honey with cinnamon and leave the mixture on overnight for a more aggressive solution.
8. Papaya Mask
Numerous acne treatments include papaya as one of their main ingredients. You can make your own papaya mask when confronted with acne emergencies by mashing up one papaya and applying it directly to the skin. Let the mask work for at least half an hour before rinsing it off.
9. Turmeric Works Wonders
You should always have turmeric in handy for emergency situations, as it is particularly effective in curing pimples overnight. It may also help to reduce pimple scars if used over longer periods of time. You can combine turmeric with water or yoghurt (though you have to make sure that you mix the ingredients in the correct proportions) and apply the mixture for 30 minutes before rinsing and moisturizing.
The advantage of cucumbers is that they are particularly soothing, especially when your pimples are sore. Granted, it is not as effective as other solutions, but it significantly reduces painful zits and cysts.
Popped pimples should definitely be out of the question, as they do not only cause other pimples to appear, but also aggravate the pimple in question. Though pimple popping is particularly tempting, make sure to avoid it at all costs and try other remedies.
